Practical Life
To support the young child’s natural desire to “do it myself”, the area of Practical Life offers abundant opportunity for successful independence. Children learn to undertake daily activities such as pouring water and grains, sweeping, tying shoelaces, spooning, polishing, threading, washing, cleaning, sorting, etc… While he/ she is engrossed in this work he is developing his concentration, attention to details and his coordination. These exercises are the important foundation in which the child becomes a self-confident and enthusiastic lifelong learner.
Sensorial
Children are continually surrounded by new sensations. The Sensorial Materials activate the child’s absorption of these new impressions. They enable him to categorize and organize the unfamiliar. Each piece of materials isolates one definite quality of sense: color, size, weight, shape, texture and sound. Each piece of material stimulates extensive vocabulary building. When a child develops his senses through daily use of the material he is acquiring the necessary skills for reading
Language
The child has learned language naturally from his environment. Now the trained teacher brings these words to life. The alphabet identified by its sounds, is presented with sandpaper letters that provide a phonic base for reading. The child not only hears the sound “a” and sees its shape, but in tracing he trains his muscles for writing. He begins reading when he is ready and proceeds at his own pace. With the teacher’s support, each child is given the appropriate lessons based on readiness – not the child’s age
Mathematics
Montessori Math material is well thought of and presented to the child in the most logical and exciting form. Before using abstract workbooks and memorization, manipulation with material makes the 4 operations (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division) easily understood. They literally carry, borrow and change the quantity involved. Our preschool aged children easily grasp the concept of quantity by working with the bend materials that represents units, tens, hundreds and thousands. When Math is presented this way, the young child is able to absorb the concepts and build a strong foundation of understanding for future learning.
